Siu Lim Tau

Ip Man First FormSIU LIM TAU  "Little Idea"

When we learn Wing Chun, we must know the objectives of the hand forms first. After knowing those objectives, we then have the right direction to do practice more effectively.
Siu Lim Tau is the first hand form in the Wing Chun system, some people think that it is only a basic hand form because it’s the first form we learn. In some ways this is partially true, but without a proper understanding of the position, energy and application in every single movement we can not progress with any considerable skill in our training. Most of the movements we learn in Chum Kiu, Biu Gee, Muk Yan Jong and Bat Jam Dao come from Siu Lim Tau, so to call Siu Lim Tau a basic hand form is unjustified; it is an important FOUNDATION of the Wing Chun system.

The 1st form is taught in three sections, giving the student three requirements to understand.  In the 1st section the student is taught proper position and proper energy (Gung Lik).  The student also learns at all movements are driven by the elbow at this stage.  The 2nd section emphasizes releasing the energy (Fa Jing).  This is where the students learns about explosive relaxed power.  Finally in the 3rd section the understanding is about application.  Although there are many techniques in through out Siu Lim Tau, it is very important that the student understands these three requirements.
