Ip Man First FormSIL LIM TAU  "Little Idea"

When we learn Wing Chun, we must know the objectives of the hand forms first. After knowing those objectives, we then have the right direction to do practice more effectively'.Sil Lim Tau is the first hand form in the Wing Chun system, some people think that it is only a basic hand form because it’s the first form we learn. In some ways this is partially true, but without a proper understanding of the position, energy and application in every single movement we can not progress with any considerable skill in our training. Most of the movements we learn in Chum Kiu, Biu Gee, Muk Yan Jong and Bart Jarm Dao come from Siu Nim Tau, so to call Sil Lim Tau a basic hand form is unjustified; it is an important FOUNDATION of the Wing Chun system.

STANCE/FOOTWORK:

Sil Lim Tau Ma, (balance stance). The stance should be at the practitioners shoulder width, with the shoulders aligned straight on top of the inside edge of our feet. Knees are slightly bent and aligned with the top of our toes. The back of the head lines up with the centre point of our heels. Hips are forward, back straight, stomach in, upper body relaxed, knees pulled in and feet slightly turned inward.
